Marakesh with a population of 840,000 is situated just north of the Atlas mountains. It is called the Red City because of the original clay colour of the houses. The city was founded a thousand years ago but was destroyed and built in the 12th century.
The city is a major commercial, agricultural and touristic centre. Industries include the processing of fruit, palms and vegetables, wool, flour, building materials, leather products, carpets and mining.
There are alot of monuments to see in Marrakech, the most famous one is the Koutoubia mosque. The biggest tourist attractions are the Old city, the suuq and the square in front, Jamaa l-Fnaa. |
